Let's look at the situation differently. A child's intention is never to give you a hard time. The reason kids are "acting out" is because they need one of the following:
1. Connection (to be accepted, for an adult to delight in who he/she is)
2. Someone who understands (respond to the child's needs and notice how he/she feels)
3. A reaction (curiosity to see how you are going to react - remember that we need to re-inforce boundaries when this happens, kids are made to test boundaries)
4. Protection (the need to feel safe, help to regulate emotions when necessary)
