Play Therapy can help any child who:
is not realizing his/her full potential academically or socially
has nightmares or disturbed sleep
at risk of being or are excluded from school
suffered trauma
suffered emotional, physical or sexual abuse
is adopted or fostered
suffers because of separated / divorced parents
suffers from anxiety, stress or phobias
suffered a loss or bereavement
is withdrawn or continually unhappy
is ill, disabled or autistic
finds it difficult to make friends
quarrels frequently with peers and siblings
bullies others or is bullied
displays inappropriate behaviour
doesn't play
A child is given "Play time" which will take place every week at the same time and place. Every "Play time" session will have no interruptions and everything said or done will be kept confidential or private unless the child is harmed or hurt.
The play therapist uses different techniques according to the child's wishes. Some of these techniques include the following:
puppets
story telling
music, dance and movement
drama
creative arts
sand play
Although the sessions are private, you can support the child by:
Being sensitive to their needs after they returned from a session.
Not asking questions about what they have done in the sessions.
Be understanding about the difficulties they are facing.
